Resources vary widely by region. You may have to do a lot of your own research and make a lot of phone calls before you find the right resource. Don’t get discouraged!
First, find your local VA.
Veterans who are homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless can call or visit their local VA Medical Center or Community Resource and Referral Center where VA staff are ready to help. Ask to speak to a social worker and let them know if you are falling behind on rent, mortgage, or utilities.
If you’re not sure where to start, veterans and their families may call 1-877-4AID-VET (1-877-424-3838) to access VA services. It’s free, confidential, and available 24/7. You’ll get access to trained VA counselors and get info about VA homeless programs, health care, and other services in your area.
Find a Veteran Service Officer to help you write and submit your benefits claim to the VA. VSO services are free. Call 888-777-4443, and the National Veterans Foundation will help you locate a VSO near you.
Check out the National Resource Directory for Veterans for access to thousands of programs and services at the national, state and local levels.
The VA has a complete list of VSOs here: Directory of Veterans Service Organizations.
View the Caregiver Resource Directory or try the organizations listed below:
Often, the best resources are local. Talk to your County or your State representative. Look at local resources.
For veterans seeking emergency financial assistance to secure their housing, take a look at some of these options.
Get connected with your local Elks Lodge. Many Elks Lodges have Veterans Committees, though not all. Veterans programs vary greatly by area. Reach out to your local lodge if you would like to be in the Adopt-A-Veteran program, wish to attend a veterans holiday party, or would like to volunteer with them.
If you have a specific question or situation not addressed by the above resources, call the Lifeline for Vets at 888-777-4443.
Check out Make the Connection, a resource locater that connects you to support available in your area through the Dept. of Veterans Affairs, National Resource Directory, or SAMHSA Behavioral Health Treatment Services.
Veterans Crisis Line: If you or a loved one are in crisis, call 1-800-273-8255, and press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line. Or, text 838255. You’ll receive confidential emotional support from caring, qualified responders.
