This month, Elks were thinking alike. We heard from volunteers in multiple cities who took part in classic car shows for veterans. This type of event is always a favorite, and early fall provided some beautiful days to enjoy the shows.

Metuchen, New Jersey, Lodge No. 1914 hosted a car show and meal for the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home at Menlo Park, thanks to grant funding and help from Voluntary Service Representative Patrick Mullen.
Volunteers from the Lodge served pizza to over 85 veterans at the event. Patrick reports, “The day was filled with classic cars, music, great food, and most importantly, companionship. The veterans truly appreciated the uplifting atmosphere and the presence of the Elks.”

In Ogden, Utah, Voluntary Service Representative John McNally showed up to support the annual car show at the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home. Each year, veterans have the chance to enjoy the show along with visiting car fans. For this sunny September event, there were over 200 visitors who enjoyed a menu of popcorn, ice cream, and hot dogs. Cars weren’t the only thing to see that day, because the show also included tractors.
Robert Kittredge, Representative at the State Veterans Home in Augusta, Maine, got involved in planning and fundraising for a Corvette show and parade in September. The evening was a huge success, with much appreciation from the Home’s staff members, who said, “The Vettes for Vets event was outstanding by all accounts. You have always kept Maine Vets Augusta as a top priority.”

Voluntary Service Reps across the country are showing that veterans are always a top priority for Elks. Whether it’s a car show, fall festival, or anything else veterans enjoy doing, Elks step up to provide support. This fall, look out for opportunities for you and your Lodge to get together with veterans and show your support.
