ER November Update
Deep Creek Elks 2763 Members,
I am pleased to report that October was an active and successful month! Despite being closed for several days in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, we sustained no serious damage. We lost some refrigerated food, and our Point of Sale system was wacky for several days after power was restored, but overall, we did very well. The same cannot be said, however, about our very good friends at the Punta Gorda Elks. Once again, they sustained heavy damage, and their recovery efforts from Hurricane Ian and Helene were set back. In the aftermath of Milton, I received a call from David Lake, Past State President, who put me in touch with Snuffy Smith from Live Oak Elks. Snuffy, and many volunteers from his Elks District, put together a tremendous water shipment along with other needed cleanup supplies, and delivered those to our Lodge. Many of you have probably seen those items stacked in our Veteran’s Room. Our Trustee and BOD Chairman, Bill Chesen, has been coordinating the delivery of water, ice, and other items daily to the Punta Gorda Elks. Thank you Bill for coordinating this very important help! A very tired Tom Shoecraft, Punta Gorda Elks ER, has visited our Lodge several times in the past couple weeks, and has expressed thanks from his membership for our efforts. Our Lodge also reached out to help the Parrotheads, a local Jimmy Buffet fan club that meets once a month and raises a tremendous amount for local charities. The Parrotheads lost their meeting venue from Helene and Milton, and we are pleased to offer our Lodge as a meeting site for them once a month. We are also supporting and contributing to their chosen monthly charity. This is a very unique and beneficial partnership, and I encourage all of you to check out the Parrotheads organization. They will be here again on November 12, and all are invited to contribute and participate. Please check out our public Facebook page and calendar for further details. I hope that all of you will visit the Lodge soon, if you haven’t already, to check out the many renovations that are ongoing. In October we began the arduous task of repainting and redecorating the interior of the Lodge. The main dining room and bar area are nearly done, and we hope to tackle the Veteran’s Room next. I want to thank the painting crew, coordinated by member Mike Kaneris, for all of their hard work, and especially the folks that helped clean out the bar area before we started. This was truly a labor of love, and it was accomplished with no out of pocket expense to the Lodge. Our bartending staff has been very patient with our crew as their area was disrupted for several days. And finally (I think…), I want to give a special thanks from our Lodge to member Jeff Frank. He donated the shiny new large screen TV’s that now are mounted on the back wall of the bar. Not only did he donate the TV’s, but also the mounts, and many, many hours of labor getting them mounted and running. Jeff is also coordinating the installation and maintenance of the Bingo machines in the new game room. He exemplifies all that is good about our Lodge! As I stated at the beginning, October was very active and very successful! Our House Committee has been busy behind the scenes making our bar and restaurant what we want it to be, and our BOD’s have been quietly working on investigating and implementing changes to our aesthetics and infrastructure. Thanks everyone, and I look forward to seeing you all in the Lodge in November!
