2007 MVS Top Winner: Alice Chuang
Q: How did you choose to attend Brown University and how did you pick your major?
A: I liked the flexibility in Brown’s curriculum. Brown doesn’t have any core classes and I appreciate being able to choose classes because I liked them, not because I had to take them. Also, I got into Brown’s eight-year medical program.

I majored in bioengineering because I’ve always liked using technology in medicine and seeing how we can make health care more efficient. Instead of using technology to replace human interaction, it’s important that we use it to make better diagnoses and offer better treatment for patients.

Q: What have you been up to since graduation?
A: I’m still at Brown in medical school. They are keeping us busy, but it’s a lot of fun. It’s nice that I’m surrounded by people who know what they want to do. It’s cool to have similar interests and know that we have the same end goal. I really enjoy it.

Q: What did your ENF scholarship mean to you?
A: The Elks scholarship really helped me because it freed me from trying to find a job for the sake of money versus getting a job that I really liked. I did have summer jobs, but they were research jobs that I learned so much from. My scholarship took off a lot of stress and eased the pressure of just trying to get through.

Q: What advice do you have for other Elks scholars?
A: Take advantage of what college campuses have to offer. It’s nice to be able to do things for the sake of doing them, not because you have to. Take advantage of the opportunities you have in college and beyond. If you have the chance to try something, just go for it.

Q: What is an interesting fact about you that most people would find surprising or unexpected?
A: I was involved in music during high school, and I did joined an a cappella group this year. That surprises people, and myself too!
