This year’s Kids Bingo was held Saturday, July 25, 2015 at the Lodge and offered free school supplies for all the youngsters who attended. There were more than 130 school-age children who participated, each receiving a drug awareness backpack filled with most of the school supplies they will need for the upcoming year. Also awarded during the event were various special prizes, including gift cards, flash drives, ear buds and more (above). The remainder of the supplies was donated to the Animas Schools and local pre-schools Kids Bingo is funded through an Elks National Foundation Beacon Grant. The Beacon Grant is used for ongoing, successful lodge projects that address local issues and focus on those in need.
SPLASH Out Drugs delivers powerful message! The 2015 SPLASH Out Drugs event, hosted by the Lordsburg Elks Lodge, was held June 15, 2015 at the Lordsburg Municipal Swimming Pool. The annual event offers free swimming, food and prizes for local youth while Elks members visit with the youth about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. This year’s event them was a superhero one and participants were given the message that they have the “power to splash out drugs!” The event was supported by a grant from the Elks National Foundation, as well as by the City of Lordsburg and Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office. More than 140 youth cooled off during the event. Above, Elroy T. Elk made an appearance where he danced with children, and adults, before taking time to visit with the youngsters. Drug awareness is one of the key education components focused on by Elks across the country.
In an effort to raise awareness when it comes to underage drinking and driving, the Lordsburg Elks Lodge, in cooperation with the New Mexico Elks Drug Awareness Program, had this MADD vehicle on display last Saturday, prom day in Hidalgo County. The vehicle display was part of the day’s events at the Elks Lodge, which included a presentation by Toni Hernandez of Las Cruces’s Shattered Lives program. Students in attendance at the one hour presentation won prizes and were able to take a close look at the MADD vehicle, which was last driven by three Las Cruces teens who made the bad decision to drink and drive. Two of the teens died at the scene of the accident and one survived after spending more than a month in the hospital. Above, Lordsburg Elks Lodge Youth Activities and Drug Awareness Chairman Maria Sanchez points out details to Angel Alvarado and Aleah Armendariz before the presentation begins.
