The Lordsburg Elks, with the help of the Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) and other local youth, placed American flags on the graves of local veterans at Shakespeare and Mountain View Cemeteries Friday morning. More than 400 flags were placed in honor of these American heroes in honor of Memorial Day weekend. Flags were also placed on gravesites in Animas. The flag project is an annual one for the local Elks lodge and is supported by the New Mexico Elks Associations’ Veterans Services program. The Elks are currently accepting torn and tattered flags that will be respectfully destroyed in a flag burning ceremony on June 13. Flags can be dropped off at Quality Auto, the Cottage House and the Hidalgo County Herald.
