"Part of continuing to pursue the Elks’ values is my aspiration to become a Physician where I can seek the knowledge and skills that will allow me to help others at an even higher level. I come from a rural area with a large population of homeless, drug addicted, and low-income residents, and my time spent volunteering in our local Free Medical Clinic has demonstrated the immense need for medical care to be offered in unconventional locations and accessible to all. I would like to be part of the solution to this increasing problem and be able to give back to the community that has given me so much."

After losing her husband, Gunther, to a staph infection in November 2009, the late Lee Weigel wanted to improve the quality of healthcare in our country. To realize that goal, she partnered with the Elks National Foundation to endow the Gunther and Lee Weigel Medical School Scholarship, which helps Elks scholars pursue careers in medicine.
